A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy who was working at a school crossing on the first day of school Thursday is recovering after being struck by a car.
Few details have been released about the incident, but Sheriff Janis Mangum says the officer, Drew Archer, was treated at a hospital and released.
Sheriff Mangum also posted a video on Facebook recounting the incident, and with a number of School Resource Officers with her, issued a plea for motorists to slow down around schools and be aware of not only law enforcement officers such as deputy Archer but also other pedestrians.
“Scary times for us when we hear that call,” she said. “Not sure what happened that he couldn’t be seen. (His) car was in the road. Blue lights were on, and he was in the road directing traffic.”
Mangum said she was asking all drivers who bring their children to school and anyone driving through school zones to “be mindful, be cautious, slow down.”
