The Trump administration has demanded that states remove references to gender identity from sex education materials or risk losing federal funding.
Georgia and 39 other states are being targeted by the Department of Health & Human Services in a move that could withhold $81.3 million in funding for the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) if they do not remove references to transgender and nonbinary individuals in educational curricula.
Georgia stands to lose $4.5 million.
WCVB reports LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have criticized the demand, stating that it undermines the goal of providing accurate and informative sexual education to young people.
