NEWS IN BRIEF – GPD: Attempted $4K theft foiled; Winder city official leaving

*We often report about thefts, scams, frauds, etc. that cost the victims hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. But here’s a story about attempt at one that failed. Had it succeeded, it would have cost a 36-year-old Gainesville man $4,000. It involved someone who attempted to cash a money order in the victim’s name, but ” the bank immediately called the victim (and) no money was exchanged,” said Gainesville Police spokesman Kevin Holbrook.

*Winder’s Assistant City Administrator Roger Wilhelm is stepping down effective August 25. Wilhelm, who has been with the city 17 years, is embarking on a new career chapter “providing support to local governments in the private sector,” according to a city news release.
