A 40-year veteran lawman is the new Deputy Chief of the Flowery Branch Police Department (FBPD).
John Powell was sworn in recently and fills a post that has been vacant for a year, according to City Clerk Sheila Cooper. “We have had a vacancy in this position for almost a year; it was not funded during the FY2025 budget process,” Cooper said Wednesday. “After reorganization of the department…there was funding for the position.”
Chief Powell brings with him more than four decades of law enforcement experience, having served departments in Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. “Throughout his career, he has worked his way through the ranks all the way up to the position of Chief of Police — and brings a wealth of leadership and knowledge to our department,” says a Flowery Branch Facebook post announcing his swearing-in.
His experience includes serving as Chief of the Glynn County (Brunswick, Ga.)) Police Department.
