Habersham County officials are warning of a scam in which some people are being contacted about an event at the county fairgrounds in which vendors are needed. They issued the warning in the form of a statement Wednesday:
“It has been brought to our attention that a post has been made trying to get the public to sign up for a craft fair at the Habersham County Fairgrounds on May 3-4 and May 17-18,” the message reads, “please be aware WE DO NOT HAVE ANY EVENT OF THIS TYPE BOOKED AT THE FAIRGROUNDS FOR THESE DATES.”
This is a fraudulent post, county spokeswoman Ashlyn Brady said. “We have taken the steps and reported the post and the account. We have also reached out to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office.”
Brady urged anyone being contacted about things like this to call and check with the county recreation department about an event before sending anyone money. And, she added, “Habersham County does not take payment through accounts like Venmo for any event.”
The warning comes complete with a copy of the message that was being sent to would-be vendors and it appears to have originated in Toccoa.
