Use of force probe; Another fish kill; MLK birth home reopens; GBI arrests sheriff

*Tifton Police are investigating after mobile phone video appeared to show officers repeatedly striking a suspect while he was lying face down on the ground. The incident happened during a response to a reported domestic disturbance. WALB reports the man seen in the video, identified by police as James Milton, is charged with misdemeanor obstruction and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. The department says the case is undergoing an internal review.

*Authorities are investigating a fish kill in the South River, which runs through Atlanta. Dead fish were found last weekend near Jonesboro Road. The Environmental Protection Division is exploring whether a chemical spill at the nearby South River Water Reclamation Center caused the incident.  Recently, thousands of fish were killed in the Chattahoochee River in the Atlanta area primarily because heavy rains washed toxins into the river.

*King family members and U.S. Park Service officials took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday on the reopening of the birth home of Martin Luther King, Jr. The two-story frame Queen Anne Victorian-style house on Auburn Avenue has been closed for nearly three years for structural preservation, modernization, and accessibility improvements. Isaac Newton Farris, King’s nephew, spoke about the family history.
