UPDATE: Clarkesville fire still cause unknown

Investigators are still searching for the cause of a weekend fire that destroyed a large commercial building in Clarkesville.

HABERSHAM CO. EMS NEWS RELEASE:

“Habersham County Emergency Services responded to a significant structure
fire late Saturday night, July 19, on Plantation Drive in Clarkesville. The
initial dispatch call came in at approximately 10:12 p.m.

Emergency response units from Habersham County Emergency Services,
Clarkesville Fire Department, and Lee Arrendale Correctional Institute
promptly arrived on the scene.

The structure quickly became fully involved and eventually collapsed in on itself.

Firefighting efforts continued through the night, with most units clearing the
scene around 2:00 a.m. To ensure ongoing safety, two engines remained on
site as part of a “fire watch,” monitoring for hot spots and preventing further
spread. Fresh crews rotated in at shift change around 8:00 a.m. Sunday
morning, and crews are expected to monitor the area over the next several
days to maintain containment and avoid rekindling.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and the building was unoccupied
at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Habersham County Emergency Services would like to thank all responding..”
