Another accident shuts down Winder Hwy.

For the second day in a row, a traffic accident closed a part of Winder Highway for a time.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) reported that this one happened Thursday afternoon near Tranquility Drive. Al lanes were shut down. The state patrol investigated but the report on the wreck is not yet available.

This is the state patrol narrative on the accident that occurred Wednesday:

“On November 1, 2023, at approximately 1:30 PM, Troopers from Post 6 – Gainesville responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the intersection of SR 53 (Winder Highway) and Union Church Road.

The investigation determined that a Kia Sedona, driven by Mathew Liquori, age 55 of Braselton, GA, was traveling eastbound on SR 53 in the left lane. A Mazda CX5, driven by Nancy George, age 73 of Hoschton, GA, was traveling northbound on Union Church Road, attempting to turn left onto SR 53. Mr. Liquori failed to obey a traffic control device and entered the path of the Mazda.

The Kia struck the driver side of the Mazda causing it to rotate counterclockwise then overturn to its roof. The Kia came to an uncontrolled rest in the intersection facing north. The Mazda came to an uncontrolled rest in the intersection facing south, on its roof.

Mr. Liquori had visible injuries; however, refused EMS transportation to the hospital. Mrs. George had visible injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Hall County EMS.

Mr. Liquori has been charged with Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device and No Use of a Seatbelt.”
