Dogs and their two-legged handlers will be taking over downtown Gainesville Saturday as Mutts On Main returns.
This annual pet expo is slated for 10:00-4:00 and will highlight dog adoptions/fostering at the Hall County Animal Shelter, said Special Events Manager Karen Diaz, with the Gainesville Tourism Department.
“As the City of Gainesville’s official kick-off to the event season, it’s particularly important to me that Mutts on Main be an enjoyable and memorable day for all — for the humans and our four-legged friends,” said an excited Diaz. “I know the City prides itself on being dog-friendly on and around the square year-round, but Mutts on Main is a unique opportunity we look forward to every year as we get to celebrate all things dogs. Some years we even have the pleasure of welcoming cats, goats and the occasional pony!
“In addition to supporting the Hall County Animal Shelter and connecting homeless dogs with loving families, Mutts on Main gives attendees a chance to enjoy the newly sprung spring season, partake in fun activities and entertainment, support pet vendors and make new friends in the process,” she said.
Diaz said attendees — two-legged and four-legged — will have the opportunity to enjoy “K9s in Flight” disc dog shows at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Roosevelt Square.
K-9 units from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) and Gainesville Police Department (GPD) will also be on hand, with the HCSO K-9 meet and greet at 11:00 and GPD therapy dog meet and greet at 2:00. No demonstrations are planned.)
A fashion show highlighting local boutiques and dogs up for adoption will step off at noon, featuring pet contests for “Best Dressed”, “Best Trick” and “Look Alike.” One hundred percent of proceeds from the $5 entry fee will support adoptions and services at the animal shelter. Music will be provided by the Becky Simon Band at 2:00.
Diaz added the expo will feature several pet-related vendors and artisans, offering everything from pet food and pet clothing to pet portraits. And a treat for the humans? Surrounding boutiques and shops will hold sidewalk sales throughout the day.
On-site food vendors will include Decoy, La Mejor De Michoacan ice cream and Paw Paws Peanuts. And for the dogs, stop by BRITZ Dog Bakery and/or Woof Gang Bakery. Find a list and map of additional sponsors and vendors here (coming soon).
Staffers and volunteers with the City of Gainesville, who will gift free collapsible dog bowls to the first 500 people who stop by the city tent, Diaz said.
“We’ll also offer free caricature portraits to the first 120 people, thanks to our generous sponsors,” she said.
All dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Waste bags will be located throughout the square.
The following streets will close at 5:00 Saturday: Bradford and Main Streets, and parking sides of Spring and Washington streets.
