Suit filed over man’s death; Police blamed for shooting; Former teacher headed to prison, an animal abuser, too

*A family is seeking millions in the legal battle over a death in Carrollton. William Earl Head, 23, died two years ago when a dump truck ran over him while he slept near a Maple Street dumpster. FOX5 says Head’s family is blaming the city and the former owner of the shopping strip.

*A south Georgia woman’s home is riddled with gunfire, and that is raising questions about how police identify suspects. But Albany Police Chief Michael Persley is defending how the department names “persons of interest” after a family warned officers about threats of a retaliatory shooting targeting the grandmother of a suspect. He admits the grandmother’s home was hit with several rounds days after a family member was publicly identified in a murder case. He tells WALB naming persons of interest remains a key tool in solving crimes, even as concerns grow in the community.

*A former Georgia teacher is heading to prison for having a sexual relationship with a student. A judge sentenced Bonnie Brown yesterday to serve 15 years and ordered her to register as a sex offender after a jury convicted her of improper sexual contact. She previously worked as a teacher at Nathanael Greene Academy in Greensboro.

*A man is going to prison for abusing dogs in Fulton County. A judge sentenced Clarence Jones yesterday to two years, plus nearly two dozen years on probation. A jury had just found him guilty of animal cruelty. The solicitor general’s office says he was caught slamming or smashing two dogs’ heads against the ground.
