After two straight nights of stormy weather, looks like the Gainesville area is getting a break from storms this week. At least that what the forecast says although rain returns Tuesday night.
The National Weather Service (NWS) says most of the week, Tuesday night through the weekend, will be wet with the chances for rain running between 40% and 70% through the period. And there is a chance for some thunderstorms along the way. But, as of Sunday morning, no indication of a repeat of what we went through Friday and Saturday nights.
Although much of north Georgia was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch at times Saturday and Saturday night, there was no replay in Gainesville of Friday night’s apparent tornado that formed over Lake Lanier and pushed into north Gainesville, leaving downed trees and some damaged buildings in its wake. We are still awaiting an official ruling on whether it was a tornado and its intensity from NWS meteorologists after they survey the damage.
A few tornado warnings were issued for parts of west Georgia Saturday night as this latest storm system moved into the state.
