*The state is paying millions to a family in the wrongful death case of a Georgia inmate. WMAZ reports the family of Juan Carlos Ramirez recently agreed to accept $3.2 million from the state in order to drop the lawsuit. Ramirez died after he was left in a fenced-in box outside at the Telfair State Prison close to three years ago.
*Anyone wishing to experience the FIFA Fan Festival in Atlanta will need to purchase a pass. Festival officials say no free general admission passes are available for the remaining five days. General Admission-Plus passes and VIP packages can still be purchased online. The next day of the event at Centennial Olympic Park is tomorrow (Wednesday). And hotel occupancy numbers during the World Cup are a little disappointing in Atlanta. The president of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says hotels are averaging an occupancy rate at or below 60%.
*Extreme heat is slowing down Amtrak passenger trains across the Georgia-Florida border. Rail officials say mandatory speed restrictions were put into place on Monday because intense summer heat may cause steel train tracks to expand and bend. The safety slowdowns will cause delays for travelers moving through Savannah, Jesup, and Brunswick as they head south into Jacksonville.
*A high-heel shoe was one of the weapons used in an assault recently in a store in downtown Atlanta. Police are searching for the woman allegedly responsible for the attack. In addition to the shoe, Fox 5 reports surveillance video shows the woman repeatedly striking the victim with her fists, a stick, and – an orange high-heel shoe.
