The Georgia House of Representatives recently passed a resolution honoring the late Abit Massey of Gainesville.
Massey, who died a couple of years ago, was a familiar fixture around the State Capitol as he lobbied for the Gainesville-based Georgia Poultry Federation, which he headed for many years.
He also spent some time in state government.
SUMMARY OF HOUSE RESOLUTION:
“This resolution honors the life and memory of Abit Massey, expressing deep regret at his passing and celebrating his distinguished service to Georgia. It highlights his lifelong dedication to public life, including roles as executive secretary to the Attorney General and director of the Department of Commerce where he established the state’s first Tourist Division and welcome station.
The resolution also emphasizes his significant contributions to Georgia’s agriculture as a leader of the Georgia Poultry Federation and his passion for education, particularly his involvement with the University of Georgia (UGA) through various leadership positions and foundations.
Massey received numerous accolades for his service, including induction into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame, and was recognized by the Georgia Society of Association Executives.
The resolution also notes his broader influence, having met seven U.S. presidents and championed Georgia Women of Achievement.
Finally, it acknowledges his personal life, his marriage to Kayanne, their children and grandchildren, and his legacy as a compassionate and generous man who will be missed by many.”
