Social Circle takes its battle with ICE to Atlanta

A delegation citizens and public officials battling plans for an ICE detention facility in their town similar to what’s going on in Oakwood descended on the state Capitol Thursday to address their concerns to anyone who would listen.

GPB reports they are seeking more transparency from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) even though the property has already been bought and work on converting an empty warehouse into the center, potentially holding up to 10,000 detainees, has already started.

The Oakwood facility is planned for a site on Atlanta Highway could accommodate about 7,500. The Georgia centers are two of several DHS is planning establishing across the country.

This week, U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock sent a letter to new DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to reaffirm their opposition to the facility and ask for more transparency throughout the process.
