An off-duty Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy was murdered in her Cumming home Saturday and her son was seriously wounded. The woman’s boyfriend has been charged in the case.
“A citizen from the Villages at Shakerag subdivision called 911 telling them her neighbor showed up at her front door and was bleeding,” Forsyth County sheriff’s spokeswoman Stacie Miller said Sunday. “The juvenile explained that his mother and her boyfriend were arguing, and the boyfriend was shooting a gun.”
When deputies arrived they attempted to contact anyone inside the residence.
“After getting no response, they entered the home to search for additional victims,” Miller said. “They located a female, later identified as an off-duty Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy, dead in the upstairs bedroom. The suspect had left the scene in a vehicle prior to deputies’ arrival.”
The officers were able to identify the suspect as Eric Sumner, 43, of Suwanee.
Detectives were able to track the suspect traveling south on I-75. They contacted the Monroe County
Sheriff’s Office, who located the suspect on I-75. After a brief chase, Sumner was taken into custody. He is being held by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office until he can be transported back to Forsyth County to face charges of murder, and aggravated assault with intent to murder. Additional charges are pending, Miller said.
The identities of the victims are being withheld until the next of kin is notified
“The loss of life to violence is senseless, but the loss of a law enforcement officer should hit home to
every one of us in a community. I would like to personally thank the Monroe County Georgia Sheriff’s
Office for their quick response in capturing this dangerous suspect,” said Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman.
