*Three people have been charged with scamming Georgia Tech students out of thousands of dollars. Investigators say the trio began by asking for directions to a bank and then pressuring students to withdraw money, promising repayment with interest. Reports show one student was injured trying to get the stolen money back and that student and another both lost thousands of dollars. WSB-TV reports police used Flock cameras to track and arrest Ronnie Williams, Miracle Lee and Ricardo Whyte III. Authorities are investigating whether there are additional victims and advise students to be cautious when sharing phone and personal information.
*Social Circle officials were “stood up” by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials who were supposed to meet with them about that new ICE immigrant detention center planned in the Monroe County town. City staff reports no one from the federal government showed up for the Friday afternoon meeting. DHS has bought a site on East Hightower Trial, where up to 10,000 detainees could be kept. The city has been kept in the dark about any plans moving forward.
*A former Georgia ICU nurse is going to serve time for child sex crimes. A judge sentenced the 26-year-old to ten years in prison last week for trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor. Attorney General Chris Carr says he abducted and exploited a 16-year-old Fulton County girl after meeting her through social media.
