Rains = Improve drought conditions

Drought conditions in Georgia improved dramatically over the past week in the wake of those daily rains that occurred lately. That’s according to the U.S. Drought Montior’s (USDM) latest report.

For instance, conditions in most of northeast Georgia, including Hall County, are now considered “severe” (orange on map) as opposed to “extreme.” (red on map)

Noticeable improvements also occurred across the rest of the state.

In its own drought update, the National Weather Service (NWS) noted Thursday that “Multiple rounds of rainfall throughout the month of May lead to shrinkage of extreme and exceptional drought areas. Areas received between 3-12+ inches over the month of May.”

And the level of Lake Lanier is benefitting from the rains as well – up nearly half-a-foot from a week ago. As of Thursday morning, the reading was 1066.6.
