Rain may dampen some holiday outings

Whether you plan a cookout, day on or around the lake, attending a fireworks display, or “all of the above” you may find yourself dodging a few raindrops as you celebrate the Fourth of July.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says the forecast for Gainesville and surrounding areas includes a 30-70% chance of rain and thunderstorms on any given day between now and Monday.

The best chance of showers right now is Friday when there’s a 70 percent probability.

But no rain is forecast for the “battle of the concerts” (see earlier story below) in downtown Gainesville Wednesday night and there’s only a 30 percent chance Thursday night when the 60th annual American Legion fireworks show is scheduled at Laurel Park. Here’s where you’ll find the complete seven-day forecast from the National Weather Service: 7-Day Forecast 34.31N 83.83W (weather.gov)

If your plans call for running in or just attending the annual Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta Thursday, the forecast is for temperatures in the mid-70s for the early morning start and around 90 by midday.

EARLIER STORY. POSTED SUNDAY: It’ll be the battle of the concerts in downtown Gainesville Wednesday night. The city’s first Hot Summer Nights Concert begin on the square at 6:00. Then at 8:00, just a couple of blocks away, it’s the annual Patriotic Pops Concert featuring the Northwinds Symphonic Band. That takes place on the lawn at the Smithgall Arts Center.
