Pregnant teen’s alleged abuser arrested; Intestinal bug now confirmed in Ga.; Democrats’ new southern strategy; Rural churches plagued by thefts

*A Jesup man has been arrested after allegedly impregnating a teenager twice. Detectives say John Andrew Jones had an ongoing sexual relationship with the victim that began in 2020. Police say based on the timeline of the pregnancies, investigators determined the victim was 15 and 17 when she became pregnant. Jones is now charged with child abuse and impregnating a child under the age of 16.  

*Georgia is home to 25-30 cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal disease caused by microscopic parasites that can contaminate food and water. The AJC reports that Georgia is one of 31 states with cases of cyclosporiasis, according to federal health officials. The CDC reports 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the country. *Minority leaders in Georgia and across the South are coming together to get on the same page with this year’s mid-term elections just around the corner. State Affairs’ Beau Evans reports they aim to coordinate messaging, voter outreach and campaign strategy before the November’s elections and the next round of redistricting. Evans reports the ultimate goal is to shift the balance of power in the region.

**Authorities in Burke County are increasing patrols after a rise in thefts at local rural churches. Burke County Sheriff spokesman Brandon Reeves telling WFXG several rural churches have been hit lately with thieves stealing or vandalizing air conditioning units. Maj. Reeves says they’re beefing up patrols in the county which includes more than 200 churches.
