There is growing opposition to plans for a huge rock quarry and asphalt plant on 1,000 acres in southern Jackson County.
Birmingham, Alabama-based Vulcan Materials is the company that would operate the quarry and asphalt plant. It has similar operations in 23 states including more than 20 in Georgia, one of which is in northern Jackson County.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports a meeting regarding the proposed quarry will be held by the Jackson County Planning Commission Thursday.
The site in question is between Nicholson and the Clarke County line near the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and Old U.S. Highway 441 and is now home to forests, a few homes, two lakes and a creek.
Vulcan, in addressing opposition to its plans, notes the site is next to existing commercial and industrial businesses, adding that its plans will ensure a “respectful, safe and environmentally responsible operation.” The mine, Vulcan adds, would be screened by a large buffer area.
