UPDATE: Victim of I-985 crash was Duluth basketball coach, former EHHS basketball star

5:45 A.M. THURSDAY UPDATE:

Killed in the crash was Sylvia Akers, a former East Hall High School basketball player and who at the time of her death was assistant basketball coach and special education teacher at Duluth High School. The Gwinnett Daily Post reports Akers was headed home following a game with Brookwood when the accident occurred. The Gainesville native starred at East Hall and played at Alabama before finishing her college career at UNC-Charlotte, the paper reported. Akers played for East Hall from 1976 to 1980, helping the team to state championships in 1979 and 1980.

EARLIER STORY. POSTED 11:30 WEDNESDAY:

The driver of a pickup was killed Tuesday night in a one-vehicle wreck on I-985 near Exit 12. The northbound crash occurred about 8:15.

GEORGIA STATE PATROL NARRATIVE:

“…For unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain their lane of travel, traveling off the east shoulder.  After doing so, the vehicle overturned multiple times coming to final rest on its right side. 

The driver was transported to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for serious injuries. The driver later succumbed to their injuries…”

The victim’s name was not immediately available. “I don’t have any further information at this time,” a state patrol spokesman said Wednesday morning.  “The crash report with those details is not yet complete.”
