Oakwood PD: Buford man accused of stealing at least $15k through mail thefts

A 31-year-old Buford man stole at least $15,000 through a series of mail thefts that began two months ago, according to Oakwood Police.

Detective Lt. Stewart Webb said the investigation began Nov. 7 when investigators with the Oakwood Police Department met with U.S. Postal Investigators in reference to an ongoing mail theft investigation where suspects were stealing mail from multiple post office exterior blue mail collection boxes.

“They were able to identify a suspect and provided us with a detailed case file regarding multiple thefts and bank deposit information of altered checks,” Webb said. “These suspects were targeting checks so that they could alter the checks and deposit them into their own accounts.”

Detectives began monitoring the suspect identified in this case in coordination with the U.S. Inspectors’ Office.

“During this investigation and surveillance operation, we were able to identify additional thefts of mail from the collection box located at the Oakwood Post Office. Xavier Jackson was identified as the suspect involved in these mail thefts and depositing altered checks into bank accounts.

“On 11/17/2025 at approximately 1330 hours, we executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence,” Lt. Webb said, “(and were) able to collect a large amount of suspected stolen mail and other related evidence.”

He added that Jackson was spotted pulling into the neighborhood during this search warrant and was taken into custody without incident.”

Webb said the investigation is ongoing with additional charges pending and additional suspects involved.

And he had this advice for anyone using those outside mail drop boxes:

“…be vigilant when dropping mail into the blue drop containers and ensure that your mail is passing down into the catch basin. If you see an issue, contact Post Office employees and/or local law enforcement so that the issue can be addressed.”
