No serious injuries in apt. fire; firemen rescue 6 cats

A fire in an apartment Tuesday morning in Commerce left two people injured but not seriously and firefighters rescued six cats from the flames and smoke, but another got away.

COMMERCE FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE:

“(The fire was) at 25 Wilhard Street in downtown Commerce. Assisting agencies included Nicholson Fire Department, Maysville Fire Department, Jackson County Correctional Institute Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, and Commerce Police Department.

The first arriving fire crews reported smoke coming from a second-floor apartment window. With several nearby building exposures surrounding the apartment, there was concern for potential fire spread.

…Fire personnel initiated an aggressive interior fire attack and were able to quickly extinguish the fire before it could spread to neighboring buildings. The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the apartment.

Two occupants were transported by Jackson County EMS to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters were also able to rescue six cats from the apartment, while one cat jumped from the window during the incident and is still missing. One of the rescued cats required oxygen using a pet oxygen mask, which was recently donated to the department by Bark Street Grooming. The cats were transported to Commerce Veterinary Hospital for further evaluation and care…”
