*Local and state leaders are working to designate the Ocmulgee Mounds as the state’s first and the nation’s 64th national park, with recent land acquisitions and donations expanding the park’s footprint. It’s the latest in several years of trying to get the designation.
*American birthrates are declining, with Georgia residents also experiencing a decrease in the number of babies being born. Simon Greenberg, Founder of Medidex, says he has noticed a shift in how families are forming and that change comes with potential health and economic implications. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports Georgia’s economy could be negatively impacted by the declining birthrates, as reflected in data from the CDC and US Census Bureau. Experts say some of the factors contributing to this trend include delayed family planning, increased access to birth control and fertility struggles, and complex socioeconomic issues. Lawmakers are advised to consider the implications of Georgia’s aging population, economic struggles, and declining birthrate on the state’s economic future.
*Big changes are coming to the Columbus Airport as it will be suspending all flights beginning in August. A $20 million project will involve reconstructing the primary runway. The goal of the four-month project is to accommodate larger aircraft, address storm drainage, and reduce runway wear. Flights will be temporarily suspended starting August 5th through November 28th.
