Nearly 20 years in the making…

Dawson County officials and others are about to break ground on a project that has been in the works for 19 years: the Russell Creek Reservoir.

The Etowah Water & Sewer Authority will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the project it says is designed to meet Dawson County’s water needs for the next 50 years.

“This historic project is the result of 19 years of planning and permitting and includes a 137-acre reservoir, a 110-foot earthen dam, a 2.5-mile raw water pipeline and water treatment plant
improvements,” an announcement of the groundbreaking plans says. “Once completed, it will take approximately three years to build and one year to fill, representing a generational investment in the future of Dawson County.”

The groundbreaking is scheduled Thursday at 10:00. Anyone planning to attend is asked to park at the First Baptist Church in Dawsonville. Shuttles will take attendees to the construction site starting at 8:15. And organizers say if you are planning to go, be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
