Multi-agency effort rescues man from Chattahoochee near Buford

Several agencies were successful late Sunday afternoon in rescuing a man from the Chattahoochee River near Buford.

Firefighters from Buford responded to a report of a person in the middle of the Chattahoochee River with water up to his neck and screaming for help.

The 911 callers advised that he did not have a life jacket on and did not know how to swim.

Forsyth County Fire Department requested mutual aid from the Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services swift water team.

Soon there were reports that the man, whose name was not released, had lost grip and was now struggling underwater.

The Forsyth County Fire Department’s Swiftwater team entered the river with two rescue swimmers after locating the victim holding on to a piece of wood south of Bowmans Island.

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Swiftwater team and three swimmers pulled the man from the water.

All fire department swimmers were out of the water, and the scene was under control by 8:00. The man was taken for evaluation to the local hospital.
