Motorist facing nearly 20 charges following weekend chase

HABERSHAM CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE:

“A Clarkesville man was arrested on 18 charges Friday night after leading Habersham
County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a high-speed chase in the southern part of the
county.

At 10:07…a deputy assigned to the Habersham County Sheriff’s
Office Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.) observed a vehicle traveling
more than 100 mph northbound on Ga. 365 near Mt. Zion Road outside Alto.

As the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the Nissan Maxima passed other
vehicles on the right near Anderson Village and failed to stop for the deputy’s blue lights
and siren, initiating a pursuit.

The driver of the Nissan continued to drive in a reckless manner, turning left onto
Duncan Bridge Road (Ga. 384), where the Nissan passed vehicles on double yellow lines
with speeds still in excess of 100 mph.

As the vehicle approached Pea Ridge Road on Ga. 384, the deputy was able to initiate a
PIT maneuver to bring the chase to a stop. The male driver, later identified as Zachary Bryan DeVincentis, 23, of Clarkesville jumped out of the vehicle and was taken into custody in under a minute.

DeVincentis, who was not hurt, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police
officer, speeding in excess of maximum limits, driving under the influence, reckless
driving, three counts of too fast for conditions, possession of open alcohol container,
failure to maintain lane, two counts of failure to signal lane change or turn, two counts
of improper passing in a no-passing zone, driving within a gore or median, failure to
maintain lane, distracted driving, following too closely, and speeding in excess of
maximum limits.”
