More overdose deaths?; $12K+ lost in separate fraud/swindle cases

Gainesville Police are investigating two more deaths of young people that may have been caused by drug overdose.

The victims in these cases were a 25-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man. Both happened within the last week, according to spokesman Kevin Holbrook.

The victims in the fraud/swindle cases were a 61-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man.

The woman reported losing $8,000. “Subject opened an account with fraudulent money sent to her in a check,” Lt. Holdbrook wrote in an email. “She then spent money to buy gift cards and send to the scammer.”

In the other case, the victim says somebody he did not know bought items online using his credit card. He told police the loss totaled $4,274.
