A member of Gainesville’s homeless community was fatally injured Monday night when he was struck by a train on Gainesville’s southside, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).
Spokeswoman B.J. Williams said Danny Diaz, 42, was struck around 9:30 by a northbound train near Georgia Avenue and Industrial Boulevard. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
“According to the initial investigation, the train conductor saw Diaz and applied the brakes on the train as he sounded several warnings, but Diaz did not exit the tracks,” Williams added. “As a result, Diaz was hit by the train.”
Officials with Norfolk Southern Railroad and HCSO continue the investigation into the fatal
accident.
