One of the many wildfires burning across north Georgia has now claimed a life. Details are sketchy but it happened Wednesday in Lumpkin County. And today has been declared another High Fire Danger day by the weather service.
Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard referred to the fire fatality in his county in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.
“Due to an uncontrollable brush fire you will notice heavy Law Enforcement and EMS presence in the area of Buckhorn Tavern Road – White Stone Lane,” he wrote. “The fire is contained but unfortunately there was a loss of life. Please Pray for this family.”
The number of such fires has grown this week after a series of blazes in northwest Georgia that at one time forced the evacuation of several homes.
The largest continues to be the fire in Rabun County in the Chattahoochee National Forest. As of Thursday morning it had already burned just shy of 500 acres and still had not been contained.
And weather forecasters and the Georgia Forestry Commission say conditions are expected to remain ideal for such fires for at least the next couple of days. The High Fire Danger Alert for today covers all of north Georgia and parts of central Georgia.
