Longest-serving sheriff dies; Latest on ASU mass shooting; Latest on Sapelo gangway collapse

(GEORGIA NEWS NETWORK) – America’s longest serving sheriff has died at the age of 92. Houston County Sheriff H. Cullen Talton, Jr. passed away at his home Saturday. Sheriff Talton, who served as Houston County Sheriff for nearly 52 years, was a dedicated public servant and a beloved figure in Georgia law enforcement, according to the announcement of his death.

*A mass shooting at an Albany State University (ASU) homecoming event Saturday left one person dead and five wounded. GBI agents identified the person who died Saturday night as 19-year-old De’Morion Tashawn Daniels, of Newnan, and they say he was not a student. The GBI says the wounded are a 13-year-old, a 17-year-old, a 16-year-old, a 20-year-old, and a 19-year-old. Police took at least four people into custody, but as of Sunday night no charges had been filed.

*State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Walter Rabon says such a aluminum gangways such as the one that collapsed Saturday on Sapelo Island, killing seven people and injuring 20 should require little maintenance and so the investigation will likely focus on its condition and use. About 40 people were on it when it gave way.
