*New data shows that canceled leases on government-owned properties are growing. Avison Young, a commercial real estate services firm, reports that Georgia has had 11 leases canceled this year. Some of the vacated spaces include a building formerly used by the CDC in Chamblee, and other federal offices covering Savannah to Norcross.
*A shooting at a Georgia youth detention center is under investigation. The Department of Juvenile Justice reports a masked gunman fired shots at the center in Claxton yesterday, but no one was injured. The facility was placed on lockdown during the investigation. Several suspects were taken into custody.
*”Operation Southern Slow Down” has kicked off in five southeastern states, including Georgia, urging drivers to slow down or face potential tickets. The campaign aims to raise awareness about speeding-related crashes, which have seen a significant increase in recent years. WSAV reports that in Georgia alone, the number of speeding-related fatalities has risen by almost 35% over a five-year period.
*The state Department of Natural Resources is reporting a good end to an emergency with a bear in northeast Georgia. WSB-TV reports wildlife officials were called to Rabun County after hearing multiple reports about a bear with a plastic container stuck around its head. They were able to sedate the bear in order to remove the plastic and release it back into the wild.
