DNA testing solves Lumpkin Co. cold case murder

Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard took to Facebook Thursday to announced that a 2001 murder has been solved through DNA testing and the killer is now deceased.

Herman Wilder was killed May 25 of that year at Golden Hills Apartments in Dahlonega.

Sheriff Jarrard met with Wilder’s family members Thursday to give them the news, saying “I’m sorry that it took this long” while adding that he is “thankful for the technology that exists today” that has allowed some closure to the Wilder family.

He added that the DNA testing confirmed that Carroll Dean Burrell of Rabun County, who was 41 at the time, committed the crime.
