Edwin Garcia Alonzo, 36, Jefferson, has been charged with murder in connection to the death of Mateo Gomez Lucas. Alonzo was taken into custody last Sunday in Hall County, the GBI said Friday.
Jefferson police Chief Joe Wirthman said told the Athens Banner-Herald the two men knew each other but a motive for the shooting has not been established.
Alonzo was also charged with possession of methamphetamine. A hold was also placed on him from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to Chief Wirthman.

Jefferson Police and the GBI are investigating the shooting death of a man found near a Jefferson intersection Friday night.
It happened near U.S. 129 Business and Storey Lane.
The victim, Mateo Gomez, was unconscious when he was discovered about 10:30. He died later at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville, according to the GBI.
