Flowery Branch is one of 23 places in the country where the Trump administration is considering locating ICE detention facilities, according to a report by Bloomberg News.
The proposed sites would range in size from 500 to 9,500 beds. If completed as planned, the larger facilities would be some of the biggest detention centers of any kind in the country.
These locales were named in plans for “warehouse-based” jails, not new facilities constructed by the government. They range in size from 9,500 beds to 500 beds. The Flowery Branch facility would hold 1,500 beds. But owners of the facilities ICE identified in these cities and towns say they have no plans to sell to the agency.
And already the plans for a facility in Social Circle, Georgia, have caused an uproar – from city officials to everyday citizens. The mayor and city manager have said their town does not have the infrastructure to support such a facility, which the government says would be built to house 8,500 detainees. EARLIER STORY. POSTED JANUARY 2: Social Circle to ICE: No room for your detention facility
The site in Flowery Branch is at 3619 Atlanta Highway.
