Investigators working to identify man fatally struck by train

An unidentified man was struck and killed by an Amtrak passenger train over the weekend, the second such incident in Gainesville in a month and fifth since last October.

A spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) says the latest happened about 1:30 Saturday morning at Aviation Boulevard and Dorsey Street.

“According to the initial investigation,” Derreck Booth said, “the unidentified man was walking on the tracks, away from the approaching train, when he was hit. The conductor of the Amtrak train sounded the train’s horn and applied brakes, but the man did not react. He died at the scene.”

Investigators responded but were not immediately able to confirm the victim’s identity.
