Huge drug bust; Tax rebates; Dogfighting indictments; Data centers: The latest; Atlanta ’28?; Incompetent arsonist?

*A massive drug bust in Georgia is keeping more than half-a-ton of methamphetamines off the street. Federal agents reportedly found eleven-hundred pounds of the drug stashed in the roof of a tractor trailer last week. The truck was pulled over in Troup County after traveling from the Texas-Mexico border. The drugs are valued at around 25-million-dollars.  
 
*Georgia’s amended 2026 budget is a done deal. Governor Brian Kemp signed the plan on Tuesday, giving state employees a two-thousand-dollar bonus and up to 500-dollars back in a rebate for taxpayers. Property owners will also see a reduction on their tax bill. More than 400-million-dollars has been set aside for the construction of a mental health hospital.  

*Nearly 20 people are facing charges in a Twiggs County dogfighting investigation. A grand jury indicted the group last week, which came after a year’s worth of investigative work on the case. The sheriff’s office says it had the help from LaGrange Animal Control, ASPCA and the Atlanta Humane Society. There’s no word yet on how many dogs were involved. 

*Georgia lawmakers are working to protect residents from the costs of data centers. The state House passed a bill requiring contracts between contractors and utilities to prevent contractors from passing energy costs to residents. The bill still needs Senate approval.  Meanwhile, the Columbus Ledger-Inquirer reports opponents of a proposed data center there have petitioned against it with 1,700 signatures.
 
*Atlanta ’28? The city is in the running to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention. The Democratic National Committee says Atlanta is one of five cities under consideration.

*A man accused of setting fire to a Byron church in 2024 is scheduled to appear in court to argue that he is not competent to stand trial. Luke Westfield was charged by the Byron Police Department with setting two fires at the Byron United Methodist Church. Westfield, from Columbia County near Augusta, faces federal arson charges, and psychiatrists have evaluated his mental competency, 13 WMAZ reports.
