A now-fired Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Gainesville employee and a friend are accused of sexually assaulting a patient last month. The matter came to light only this week following the arrest of the pair.
Matthew Phillip Koch and Mai Kim Tran, both 44, and both of Gainesville, are each charged with Sexual Battery of a Person Over 16 and Sexual Assault.
“Koch was an NGHS employee,” medical center spokesman Sean Couch said. “Tran is not and was not an NGHS employee.
“Koch’s date of hire was 4/20/2009. He was placed in investigative leave on 3/14/2025, the same day NGHS was contacted by Gainesville Police Department’s investigators. His employment was terminated 4/21/2025.”
Couch added that Koch’s title was Equipment Tech in the hospital’s Surgical Services Division.
Koch remained in the Hall County Jail without bond late Friday morning. Tran was freed Thursday night after posting a $9,200 bond.
