*One person was critically wounded in a shooting in Sparta early today, according to a Hancock County Sheriff’s Office social media posting. It happened at a party about 3:00. “Five individuals were injured and transported to local hospitals, with one person listed in critical condition and four others in stable condition,” the posting says.
*The Georgia Aquarium’s two new Beluga whales are settling in nicely after their trip from Canada to Atlanta. aquarium officials say. The pair arrived by cargo plane recently and have been playing peacefully with the aquarium’s four other Belugas.
*A metro Atlanta man is accused of firing more than 50 shots into a Gwinnett County house. The family, including two children, say they hid inside their Norris Lake home during the incident which led to a SWAT standoff and a neighbor’s arrest. No injuries were reported, but damage was caused to the outside of the home, a work truck, a camper, and a water pipe causing parts of their property to be flooded. No word on what led up to the shooting, according to Fox 5.
*The DeKalb County School District has agreed to pay $29.5 million to seven charter schools following a lawsuit accusing the district of withholding funding. A judge ruled that the district breached its contracts with the schools by withholding state and federal funding and failing to meet minimum funding requirements. The AJC reports Charter schools, which are publicly funded but privately operated, must be funded no less favorably than other schools under state law.
