HCC Chairman discusses the keys in finding a spot for a new courthouse

Hall County Commission (HCC) Chairman David Gibbs says plenty of room for parking and expansion down the road for a new county courthouse are keys to where it will be located.

Gibbs, appearing with host Mike Wofford on Thursday’s “Community Forum” on 97.5 Glory FM, discussed the courthouse issue in light of comments made Monday at the end of the commission’s work session – comments that a site being closely looked at sits in the College Avenue area.

And in discussing why not expand the present courthouse, he said that’s not feasible.

“It was actually built too small when it was built, okay? And it was built engineered where this was a huge mistake. It was built. You cannot go up because it will not withstand the weight,” and you can’t go “out” because it’s landlocked.

Gibbs said the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum approving plans for the facility was for $125 million. “And that’s what we agreed to spend on the courthouse, what was in the SPLOST money, and take no debt on the courthouse.”

Gibbs had much more to say about plans for the new courthouse and you can hear the full interview with by clicking on the Community Focus logo on the Community Focus page on this website. It’s a one-hour program that airs at 9:05 each weekday morning on 97.5 Glory FM.
