Hall schools change way bus drivers are paid for homeless students

The Hall County School District (HCSD) has changed the way bus drivers are paid overtime in light of reports that one driver recently made more than $150,000 in one year and that others collected more than the average salary for a bus driver.

A spokesman for the district confirmed the changes Monday afternoon.

“Effective January 26, 2024, the compensation for McKinney-Vento pick-ups will be the driver’s hourly rate, with a minimum of one hour,” Stan Lewis wrote in an email.

McKinney-Vento is a reference to the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act which authorizes the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program and is “the primary piece of federal legislation related to the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness,” according to McKinney-Vento – National Center for Homeless Education .

Before the change, drivers were receiving $15 for each homeless student they picked up but that will no longer be the case.

The Times was first to report the salaries that had been paid certain bus drivers.
