Hall Co. names new planning, zoning director

Katie Greenway Ahmed has been named director of Hall County Planning and Zoning.

“Katie has demonstrated strong leadership and a clear understanding of planning and development in Hall County,” Assistant County Administrator John Gentry said in making the announcement Friday. “Her experience working with Hall County Planning and Zoning, the Board of Commissioners, and the community makes her well prepared to lead the department.”

Ahmed has served as Hall County’s Planning and Zoning Administrator since February 2024, overseeing departmental operations and presenting land use matters and recommendations to the Board of Commissioners. In this role, she has also helped lead several planning initiatives, including updates to the county’s Unified Development Code and Comprehensive Plan.

Ahmed began her career with Hall County in 2019 as a Planner I, where she assisted with zoning operations, development review, and long-range planning. In June 2021, she joined the City of Johns Creek as a Planner II. Ahmed returned to Hall County in 2023 as Senior Planner, quickly advancing to Principal Planner before being promoted to Planning and Zoning Administrator.

“Katie brings strong experience and a thoughtful approach to planning issues,” Gentry said. “I look forward to the continued work of the Planning and Zoning Department under her leadership.”

Ahmed holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida and earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the College of Charleston.
