“Residents of Gainesville, Georgia, just held as a protest a funeral for (their) Social Security office,” MSNBC host Rachael Maddow said on her Tuesday program last week. “They showed up in downtown Gainesville.”
The protest had been held four days earlier on March 14. The local Social Security Administration (SSA) office is one of five in Georgia targeted for closing as part of the new Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE).
Meanwhile, a flyer is circulating on social media repeating demands that 9th District Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-Jackson County) hold an in-person town hall meeting. “Have you seen our congressman,” the document reads. “Andrew Clyde, Ga. House Dist. 9 refusing to hold live town hall. May become frightened and disoriented by facts.”
And it gives Clyde’s Washington phone number: 202-225-9893.
Clyde said recently in reaction to similar calls for in-person town halls that he has held virtual town hall meetings. A few weeks ago, House Speaker Mike Johnson urged GOP members of the House to avoid in-person town halls because of the no-so-pleasant atmosphere at some of those that have been held.
