When qualifying for this year’s Gainesville City election ended Wednesday, city councilman Zack Thompson was the only candidate to succeed Mayor Sam Couvillon who is leaving the post to run for Congress next year.
Two city council seats were also up for grabs this year but in each case only the incumbents qualified.
But there will be a Special Election to fill Thompson’s seat on the council and to fill a vacancy on the city school board.
