Gville bank reports $40k loss to fraudsters; Car break-ins; 3 women fight, 2 arrested; Car theft arrest

Gainesville Police have opened an investigation into a reported case of fraud that resulted in a loss of $40,057 by United Community Bank. The loss was reported Wednesday and included in the police department’s Thursday Daily Bulletin. According to the report, the theft occurred between December 12 last year and Wednesday. No other details were immediately available.

Meanwhile, three people in one neighborhood reported Thursday that someone entered their cars overnight Wednesday. The incidents occurred in the 2500 block of Hidden Cove Court which is off Thompson Bridge Road near Holly Park. An oline post Thursday, apparently by one of the victims, warned others in the neighborhood about the incidents. “WARNING!! LOCK YOUR CARS!!!!,” it reads. “My entire neighborhood had every car broken into this morning. Police were at my door at 6am, every car that was unlocked was rummaged through and had money, wallets, purses, IDs, and other valuable items stolen. Near Old Thompson Bridge/Holly Park. My purse was flipped inside out but I didn’t have any money in it.”

A fight involving three women earlier this week ended with two of them, one 19, the other 17, in jail. “Both arrested on the same call for service at Otilla Drive,” police spokesman Kevin Holbrook wrote in an email. “Both females got into an argument with another female. The argument escalated, at which point both females struck the other female. Minor injuries reported.”

A 44-year-old woman was arrested on an auto theft charge after a brief ride in a car she stole, according to Capt. Holbrook. “Subject allegedly took a vehicle parked in the Auto Zone parking lot on Jesse Jewell Parkway and drove it across the street. The owner of the vehicle did leave the keys in it and left it unlocked. Using video from the area, police were able to determine that Jacquelyn Denise Taouis was the suspect in the crime.”
