GPD: Burglary & robbery, arson arrests

Gainesville Police recently arrested two men in connection with separate incidents – one involving burglary and robbery and the other involving arson.

In the first case, a 27-year-old Gainesville man has been arrested on a number of charges including burglary and robbery.

Roderick Daqual English was arrested Wednesday by Hall County sheriff’s deputies on warrants taken out by city police. He’s charged with Robbery by Force, Aggravated Assault, Simple Battery, Burglary, and Criminal Trespass.

A spokesman for the police department says it was a “domestic violence case,” that English went to his “ex-girlfriend’s place, threatened a man who was there with a gun, took a phone and left.”

The sheriff’s office reports that he has been released on bonds totaling $29,000.

In the second incident, Tony Fitzgerald, 58, was arrested on arson and other charges after police received a call regarding a dispute of some sort in the 3300 block of Green Hunter Lane.

“When officers arrived on scene, they did not find anyone else at the apartment,” GPD spokesman Kevin Holbrook said. “The subject (who made the call) advised he would not come out of the apartment.”

Lt. Holbrook added officers soon saw smoke and flames coming from under the door. “The flames were extinguished, and the subject taken into custody.”

A spokesman for the Gainesville Fire Department says the fire caused minor damaged and was already out when firefighters arrived.

Fitzgerald is charged with Possession and Use of Drug-Related Objects, Reckless Conduct, Criminal Damage to Property in the Second Degree, and Arson in the Second Degree.

Bond has been set at $8,300 on all but the arson charge. He’s being held without bond on that charge.
