Four area fire departments getting federal grants

The money is to be used for fire safety upgrades, according to U.S. Sens. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, and comes through the Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. That program provides funding to upgrade equipment, upgrade or purchase new vehicles, train firefighters, and more.

The Commerce Volunteer Fire Department and Nicholson Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department will receive funding for training, wellness and fitness programs, equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and modifications to facilities

Banks County and Cleveland are to use their grants to replace or upgrade vehicles.
