Flu cases surged over the holidays; Parking spot fatal shooting; Congressional aid under investigation

*Deaths attributed to the flu in Georgia increased by seven last week since seasonal record keeping began in October, according to the state Department of Public Health. That brings the number to 29. In addition, there were at least 511 new hospitalizations reporting, bringing that seasonal number to 1,580 and new outbreaks increased by 12, for a seasonal increase of 73. Cumulative data may include updated numbers from previous weeks. Nationally, a new federal report calls this year a “severe” season that is likely to get worse. *A suspect is behind bars for a deadly shooting outside a Savannah Target. Officers arrested Tyler Linn on Sunday at the parking lot for the Abercorn Street store. He’s accused of shooting father-of-three Matthew Traywick to death in a fight over a parking spot.  

*A Georgia congressman’s chief of staff is under investigation by the Office of Congressional Conduct. A report released yesterday accused Brandon Phillips of hiring and paying his girlfriend more than ten-thousand-dollars for an internship in the office of District 10’s Mike Collins. Phillips may have also misused money for personal expenses. The office is recommending a review by the House Ethics Committee.
