Flowery Branch officials defend choice for Deputy Police Chief

Flowery Branch officials Thursday defended the hiring of former Glynn County (Brunswick) Police Chief John Powell as the city’s new Deputy Police Chief.

Since the announcement that Powell had been hired earlier this week, there has been much criticism of that decision on social media, most of it alluding to legal problems the 40-year law enforcement veteran has encountered over the years. They include one in which the Georgia Supreme Court ruled in favor of Powell and his Chief of Staff while he headed the Glynn County Police Department: s24a0239.pdf

The city issued a statement Thursday that says “this decision follows a
thorough and comprehensive vetting process, conducted in accordance with city policy,
which grants the Chief of Police the authority to appoint his deputy following an extensive
background review.”

Chief Chris Hulsey expressed his confidence and enthusiasm about welcoming
Powell to the leadership team, emphasizing the department’s continued
commitment to integrity, fairness, and community service.

“I have dedicated my life for the last 19 years serving the citizens of Flowery Branch and the men and women that make up our police department,” said Chief Hulsey. “I have worked tirelessly to make our
community safer and a great place to work. I believe the hiring of Deputy Chief Powell will
help make this department even better.”

The selection process for this important position was conducted with great care and
transparency, the city’s statement says.

“I have conducted many interviews, including with John and those who have
worked alongside him throughout his 40 years of service, along with an extensive
background check,” Chief Hulsey added. “It was clear that his reputation for fairness and
integrity made him the right choice to help guide our department forward.

The city’s statement concluded by encouraging “interested or concerned residents to seek verified information through official channels. Flowery Branch remains steadfast in its commitment to
transparency, fairness, and hiring the most qualified individuals to serve our community.”
