Fire closes Cumming restaurant indefinitely

A rooftop fire at the Golden Corral on Marketplace Boulevard in Cumming Wednesday morning caused little damage but resulted in extensive smoke and water damage and the restaurant will be closed indefinitely.

“We were initially dispatched via an automatic fire alarm system indicating a water flow from the sprinkler system.,” Capt. Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department (FCFD) said.  “Soon thereafter, our 911 Center received a call confirming an active fire.”

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed fire and smoke showing from a portion of the roof.

“The fire began in the roofing system beneath the metal roof,” Capt. Shivers added.  “Roofing work was being performed on the building and a fire was accidentally started in the combustible insulation and foam board that makes up the roofing underlayment.”

When the fire broke through the roof, it set off a sprinkler and the sprinkler system activated, keeping the fire in check until firefighter put it out.

“All occupants, patrons, and roofing contractor employees safely escaped the building (without injury),” Shivers said.
